Mutual Funds with Low Minimums

It doesn't take much to get started

By Dustin Woodard, About.com

Before you head out to a restaurant for dinner, you may want to reconsider how you spend that money, because for as little as $50 you can start investing in mutual funds.

Ever spend countless hours finding the right mutual fund to buy, only to find out the minimum initial investment is $10,000? Worry no more. I have done the dirty work for you.

Below you will find two lists of mutual funds with low minimums. Rather than point you to brokers who allow small investments in a mutual fund, I created these lists so you can invest directly with the mutual fund family. The reason I did this is because, in most cases, it does not make sense to open an account with a broker unless you are spending around $5,000 per fund. The minimum transaction fees charged by the brokers will quickly gobble up a large portion of your deposit.

Because the list of funds with low initial investments is so large, I filtered the results by choosing strictly no-load, no 12b-1 fee funds that had websites. This way you can avoid unnecessary costs and it will be easy for you to find more information on how to invest in the particular fund. (If you would prefer to not exclude loaded funds or funds with 12b-1 fees, then I recommend you use this fund screener and pick an initial investment that you can afford)

The following links provide the fund name, ticker symbol, investing style, fund family, phone number, minimums, net assets, year founded and links to the fund profile and fund family Web sites.

Update: Please note, the minimums for many funds have increased. Please verify the minimum by clicking on the fund names.
